Spinning plates
Running a business means a lot of plate spinning. Juggling sales, operations, finance, people, etc., all at the same time. With so much to manage, security often slips down the list, not because leaders overlook it, but because their time and attention are pulled in many directions, and the complexities of security risk are easy to underestimate.
This can create a false sense of safety, especially with the belief that “we are too small to be a target.” In reality, every organisation holds something of value, and attackers know smaller businesses are often the most exposed.
Eventually, something gives way. One missed update or one convincing phishing email can be all it takes. It is not a question of if an incident will happen, but when.
Mind the gap
Gaps in the security configuration of systems, coverage of security controls, and oversight of business assets all contribute to security flaws that can be exploited by malicious actors.
Default security settings in cloud systems can often be assumed to be secure, when in reality they often do not cover the full range of security risks.
The same is true when relying solely on an IT managed service provider (MSP). MSPs play an important role in keeping systems running and increasingly include security tools, but their remit rarely covers everything that contributes to security; cloud services purchased outside of their offering, personal devices, overlooked security settings, staff awareness and physical security all sit outside their scope.
